What is a Diagnostic Sleep Lab?
Rush Foundation Hospital Sleep Centers are independent outpatient diagnostic centers that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep and breathing disorders. Our facilities provide private bedrooms to help ensure you feel at home during your night with us.
Why would I need a sleep study?
If you experience the following symptoms, you need to consider having a sleep study:
- Snoring
- Obesity
- Loss of sex drive
- Morning headaches
- Lack of focus
- Depression
- Excess stress
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
OSA affects 20 million adults in the United States. People who have OSA stop breathing at times during sleep due to obstruction. Pauses in breathing may occur up to 30 times or more every hour. This puts a strain on the heart and can lead to a number of serious health conditions.
How is Obstructive Sleep Apnea diagnosed?
Discuss sleep concerns with your doctor. Your doctor can refer you to the Sleep Lab nearest to you for evaluation. An overnight diagnostic sleep study (PSG) will be performed to determine what type of sleep disorder you may have. Your doctor can discuss treatment options for OSA with you.
If you do not treat your OSA, you are putting yourself at risk for:
- High blood pressure
- Irregular heart rhythm or heart disease
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Risk of driving or work-related accidents
While you sleep, your muscles relax causing your soft palate and tongue to obstruct your airway. This could cause you to stop breathing. With an overnight sleep study, we can determine if this is happening to you. This information will help your physician discuss your treatment options with you.
If you or someone you care for suffers from symptoms of a sleep disorder, seek the advice of your physician or contact us for referral, testing, and follow up treatment.
